Beer Buddies!

Andrew Duplantis and Chadly con Queso
Thumbs Up: Friends like Andrew. Sure, this guy can play him some bass (currently with Tia Carrera and Son Volt, previously with Bob Mould, Meat Puppets, Alejandro Escovedo, Jon Dee Graham, etc, etc, etc,) but he is also a fine friend. Cheers, Andrew!
A Mile High!

"I See What You Mean" bear in Denver, outside the Convention Center
Thumbs UP: Denver. Hannah and I just spent four nights in the Mile High City, enjoying almost everything about it. Sure, we had sub-par service at above-average restaurants and some complaints about the smell of feces on the public transit, but this city emphatically gets my thumbs up. For example, the current Mayor John Hickenlooper seems like a decent human being. He started the Wynkoop Brewery (the city’s first brewpub) in the late 80s and seems to be partly responsible for LoDo’s current laid-back style, which I very much appreciate.
Red Rocks, rocks!
August 24, 2008

Thumbs Up: Hannah and I were lucky enough to visit Colorado’s historic Red Rocks venue this past Thursday to see My Morning Jacket absolutely kill. I’d seen this band a few times before and fully believe “some” of the hype surrounding their live performances. While MMJ aren’t even close to my favorite band, they do command the stage in a way that any respectable music fan must appreciate, if not, enjoy. In addition to their fantastically arranged rock anthems there was magic (and cannabis smoke!) in the air for this show…I was blown away. Amen.

B Max
Thumbs UP: The Olympics and Slayer! Watching the Olympics this last week has reminded me of how lucky, lazy and pathetic I am – in turn, starting a new exercise regimen and the drinking of more red wine in place of glorious beer. That is right. Wine like blood. (Red wine has lots of antioxidants) Blood-thirsty, you ask? Slayer is the answer. I’ve been listening to South of Heaven a bit lately and let me tell you…Slayer kills. I wish I would’ve started listening to this stuff in highschool. I’d be a bit more balanced, psychologically.

Austin: It’s a city where people live and stuff
Thumbs Up: Some pools are better than others… I recently took and excursion to Hamilton Pool, rightfully a favorite spot for Central Texans to cool off in the formidable heat. The pic above was taken at a happier moment at this remarkable natural swimmin’ hole, just before I actually entered the water with a zillion tweens and toddlers. I literally overheard conversations (“Can you feel my pee!?” said one loud child to another…) that I did NOT want to hear (“Yes! Your pee is warm!” came the inevitably unwelcome reply) whilst trying to enjoy the afternoon with my beautiful wife. Alas, we traveled slightly down the road to discover the joys of a (mostly) empty Reimers Ranch Park, where we were free to swim in the Pedernales River alongside two nearby obnoxious children instead of one-hundred.

Blood. Acid. Both
August 7, 2008
Thumbs Up: Holy demons, y’all! Racebannon’s absolutely over-the-top brilliant Acid or Blood is coming out on Southern Records very soon. That’s something we can all get excited about, right? This is absolutely one of my favorite records of the past few years. Hail Racebannon! Oh yeah, they are coming to Austin’s Red7 on 9/14! Don’t miss ‘em!
